From our founder, Simon Flood:
"E-phence was one of those businesses which grew from a hobby or interest, not a commercial activity.
It was founded in 2004, after my wife Aileen and I had searched for a wrought iron and stone fence that reflected our personal tastes. We quickly realised there was a sizeable gap between what we wanted, and the quality of fences available.
So I decided to design and build my own wrought iron fence, which quickly ignited a new passion.
Since then, I have spent years researching Melbourne’s extraordinary 19th century heritage in wrought iron and stone work, which grew from the enormous riches of the gold rush.
Specialised skills in stone masonry and blacksmithing
I have also honed the specialised skills required in stone masonry and blacksmithing, and am a registered builder. I lead most of the day-to-day work on every job because that’s what I love doing.
But E-phence also retains the services of very highly skilled blacksmiths and stone masons for specialist tasks, such as reproductions of highly detailed features.
We work very closely with other local producers who also strive for excellence. This ensures the materials used to create our fences are of the highest quality, and that we have a reliable supply chain.
A very personal service for your wrought iron fencing
I will personally manage all aspects of your project, from the first meeting and creation of the initial drawings to the final fitting of the gate lock or automatic opening system.
Computer-generated images of fencing designs in situ will ensure your wrought iron fence and gates reflect your personal tastes as well as fitting within your budget. We’ll also ensure they complement the architecture and era of your property, from contemporary style to ornate Victorian.
Combine all this detailed preparation with great patience, pride in workmanship and attention to detail, and you will have an E-phence that is unique, elegant and very soundly built.
My goal is to ensure that your investment in an E-phence delivers excellent returns: a high level of satisfaction in the process, excellent after-sales support, and a wrought iron fence, gates and stonework that will last for generations.
We are very gratified to see our installations enhancing heritage houses in well-established suburbs such as Albert Park, Canterbury and Carlton. Our restorations also help retain the traditions of some of Melbourne’s leading educational institutions.”

“Just wanted to thank you for your professionalism and craftsmanship in building and installing our gate. It's wonderful to see a craftsman who cares about his work and has pride in the finished product. Sadly, the craft has all but disappeared now, and we are left with rough and ready tradies with a careless attitude. Thanks again Simon. The gate looks fantastic!”
